DKRZ granted ITMS access to the Supercomputer LEVANTE

The ITMS - project successfully applied for computing time for several Workpackages on LEVANTE - the Supercomputer hosted by the German Climate Computing Center (Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum, DKRZ).

In the future, two of the main ITMS modules will use the high computing power and storage system of the LEVANTE supercomputer at the German Climate Computing Centre (Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum, DKRZ).

For example, LEVANTE is used in Module M to assimilate ground- and satellite-based GHG observations into the ICON modeling systems used at the DWD for weather forecasting. The MPI for Biogeochemie in Jena uses it to provide a regularly updated top-down estimation of natural CO2 and anthropogenic CH4 emissions using the pre-existing CarboScope-Regional inversion.

In Module Q&S, the KIT IMKIFU will run the Process-Based Model LandscapeDNDC on LEVANTE to calculate national and European bottom-up GHG fluxes for Agricultural and Forest Systems. Likewise, using machine learning, the MPI-BGC will work on LEVANTE to calculate biogenic CO2 fluxes at high spatiotemporal resolution.

Next to reducing computing time, ITMS also profits from the direct interlinkage of the datastream within the DKRZ as the Data Assimilation and inversion systems can directly access large datasets with prior information generated, for example, by Module Q&S.
