ITMS on stage at the IWGGMS (Bonn)

July 08, 2026

ITMS joined the stage at the 22nd International Workshop on Greenhouse Gas Measurements from Space (IWGGMS), held on June 29–July 2, 2026, at Bonn  - pictured here (left) with Lukas Häffner (UBA) - explaining the link between Earth observation and emissions estimation, and (right) with Michael Weimer (IUP Uni Bremen) discussing the representativity of satellite data.

The leading international conference focussing on the monitoring of greenhouse gases from space, was organised jointly this year by the ECMWF and the DLR Space Agency. This year’s topics covered, amongst other topics, the following areas: the status of current and future space missions, data processing algorithms, calibration and validation, emission estimates and atmospheric inversions, as well as the needs and involvement of stakeholders.

From the ITMS Module OBSERVATION, the Institutes of Environmental Physics at the Universities of Bremen and Heidelberg, respectively, as well as the DLR Institute of Atmospheric Physics, were particularly well represented with new methods and results. The Module MODELLING discussed advances in assimilation of satellite data with colleagues from a wide range of international institutions. While addressing the bias between model and satellite data—which is necessary for national emissions verification—still needs further development, impressive progress has been made in the satellite-based quantification of very large emitters, which supports global monitoring.
