We launch Phase 2: Development of the ITMS 1st Generation
The Integrated Greenhouse Gas Monitoring System (ITMS) has officially entered its second phase with the developments towards a pre-operational “ITMS 1st Generation”, running from 1.8.2026 to 31.07.2030.
Many successful research projects have been completed in Phase 1. Building upon their results, ITMS now moves forward under the Phase 2 umbrella.The tried-and-tested modular structure of ITMS with the Modules MODELLIERUNG (M), BEOBACHTUNG (B), QUELLE&SENKEN (Q&S), and KOORDINATION (K) will transfer into Phase 2, while ITMS‑V from Phase 1 will overlap to December 2026.
All milestones of the first phase “ITMS Demonstrator” have been successfully achieved, marking a great foundation for the next steps. The official Kick‑off for ITMS Phase 2 will take place in Jena at the end of September. Registration is open to persons interested in ITMS via the the event page.
The focus of the work steps in Phase 2 is on creating a first-generation inversion system with a reproducible processing chain for operational use in Module M. ITMS2-Q&S will continue provide a quality-and-validation data stream and quantified uncertainties, while extending high-quality emission fields to the European domain. Module B will advance the existing data streams into an operational framework, incorporating new satellite observations and addressing observational gaps, with a focus on under-explored regions. ITMS2-K will continue to foster the coordination and cooperation of the Modules and embed scientific expertise into ITMS's operational framework.
