ITMS contributes to the WMO Integrated Global Greenhouse Gas Information System (IG3IS) workshop

July 28, 2025

The IG3IS (Integrated Global Greenhouse Gas Information System) workshop on National-scale Greenhouse Gas Monitoring from 30 June to 1 July 2025 brought together atmospheric scientists and inventory compilers to advance greenhouse gas monitoring capabilities.

IG3IS is an initiative of the Global Atmosphere Watch Programme (GAW) of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). The event operated under the motto "each fraction of warming matters, each action matters," emphasizing the critical importance of both scientific communities in climate action and understanding changes in greenhouse gas emissions.
For Germany, Dr Beatrice Ellerhoff from the German Meteorological Service presented the activities of the ITMS project at the meeting and provided insights into the first inversion results from ITMS, on behalf of Dr. Andrea Kaiser-Weiss. The workshop emphasized that effective greenhouse gas monitoring requires integration of bottom-up inventory methods with top-down atmospheric observations. Success depends on building trust between communities, developing appropriate tools for different country capabilities, and maintaining focus on actionable mitigation opportunities. The emerging IG3IS guidelines will serve as a living document that evolves with advancing research and operational capabilities.
