Welcome to the ITMS Project

Welcome to the ITMS Project

ITMS (“Integriertes Treibhausgas-Monitoringsystem für Deutschland“, engl. “Integrated Greenhouse Gas Monitoring System for Germany”) is a Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt-funded project enabling Germany to operationally monitor sources and sinks of the three key long-lived greenhouse gases (GHG) CO2, CH4, N2O through independent measurements. The collaborative project supports data-driven GHG monitoring and the development of an operational GHG data assimilation service at the DWD.

Recent News

ITMS joined the stage at the 22nd International Workshop on Greenhouse Gas Measurements from Space (IWGGMS), held on June 29–July 2, 2026, at Bonn  - pictured here (left) with Lukas Häffner (UBA) - explaining the link between Earth observation and emissions estimation, and (right) with Michael Weimer (IUP Uni Bremen) discussing the representativity of satellite data.
The Integrated Global Greenhouse Gas Information System (IG3IS) brought together scientists, policymakers, and business representatives at its Stakeholder Consultation and User Summit in late April 2026. The three-day event underscored a growing consensus: atmospheric greenhouse gas monitoring has matured to the point where it can meaningfully support climate policy but getting data into the hands of decision-makers remains a central challenge.

Under the motto “The other half of the problem,” researchers and inventory compilers met in Utrecht from June 15–17, 2026, for the 1”0th International Symposium on Non-CO₂ Greenhouse Gases (NCGG10)”. The motto highlights the significant contributions of non-CO₂ greenhouse gases such as CH₄, N₂O, and SF₆ to global warming—and the associated challenges of advancing climate protection and mitigation measures
The Integrated Greenhouse Gas Monitoring System for Germany (ITMS) was represented at the 2026 EGU General Assembly in Vienna with a wide range of oral and poster presentations. In addition, several sessions were organized by ITMS members.
